Canoe Slalom and Canoe Sprint are two different type of sports. Canoe Sprint is a sport in which the participants have to race on the kayaks and canoes on still water. Race categories are varied by the number of athletes on the boat. The length of the course and whether the boat is a canoe or a kayak play a big role in varying the categories.
International Canoe Federation is the body who governs the sport. The distances which are recognised by the ICF are 200m, 500m, and 1000m. The races take place on a straight course with each boat going on its given lane.
In a kayak, the paddler can be seated in the direction of the travel and he/she uses the double bladed paddle to move across the starting point to the end. Whereas, in a canoe the paddler kneels on one knee with other leg put forward and flat in the floor and he/she paddles a single paddle and only on a side, it's also called as a 'J-Stroke'.
