Artistic Gymnastics are also a part of gymnastics in which athletes perform various short routines on different objects and apparatus with less time for vaulting. The gymnastics system was included with many disciplinary sports which later became separate sports such as, swimming, wrestling, boxing and cycling. It was also used for military training.
In its present form gymnastics has gained a lot of followers and publicity. Women's gymnastics is far more popular. Women's gymnastics entered the Olympics in 1928 and was included in the 12th World championship in 1950. In the 1970's average age of Olympic gymnasts began to decrease.
A vault is an event as well as the primary piece of equipment used in a event. The vault is common between men's and women's competitions. A gymnast speeds down a runaway which is maximum of 25m (82ft) in length. The floor event occurs on a carpeted 12m x 12m square called as spring floor. The floor consists of hard foam over a layer of plywood which is supported by springs or foam blocks.
Rules :
Men and women compete in floor and vault events
Six apparatus for men and four for women.
Scoring is displayed on a panel of nine referees.
Gymnasts perform on a bar which should be 5m long and 10cm wide.
